Friuli-Venezia Giulia
By Andy Berwick, CSW
Bordering Slovenia, this north east area of Italy benefits from contrasting airflows from the Alps and the Adriatic. The most important DOC in terms of quantity is Friuli Grave. In this relatively flat plain, most of the wine is red: usually light and fruity blends of Bordeaux varieties. Refosco has a better reputation, giving wines with acidic, red berry flavors and rather harsh tannins that can develop into mellow plum and bitter chocolate flavors as they age. It is the whites from the hills that have the highest reputation. Single varietal wines are made, but the best wines are often blends. Increasingly, they are also given some cask-aging. More expressive whites come from the steeper hillside slopes of the Colli Orientali and the Collio Goriziano (or simply Collio). The accepted white varieties inlcude Tocai Friulano, Picolit ( used for desert wines) and the more widely planted Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigrio, Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay.
